Set in the 80’s in Brooklyn,New York We Own The Night tells the story of a fractured family comprising of Police Chief Albert Grusinsky (Robert Duvall), his pride and joy, his older son, Joseph Grusinsky (Mark Wahlberg) who follows his father’s footsteps and the wayward son, Bobby Green (Joaquin Phoenix), a nightclub owner.

Frequenting Bobby’s club is Russian drug dealer Vadim Nezhinski (Alex Veadov) whom the police department is desperate to capture. Though warned by Joseph, Bobby tired of constantly playing second fiddle to his elder brother continues to allow Nezhinski to the club.
One night the club is raided and Nezhinski’s henchman and Bobby are arrested. And from then on all hell breaks loose.

In true blue mafia style Nezhinski swears revenge and has Joesph shot. Though constantly at odds with his brother Bobby feels compelled to help with the police investigation while his brother recovers from near death. He is largely successful in bringing in information that has Nezhinski running for cover and earns his father’s respect and love. But this also puts him in the life of fire and Bobby and his ever supporting girlfriend, Amada (Eva Mendes) are forced to go under police protection.

Back from the hospital Joesph finds his brother in the limelight and feels shunted out. Everyone has their hands full a mole on the loose and Nezhinski constantly one step ahead of them. During a hotel shift Bobby and his team are attacked n his father dies trying to protect him.

Devastated, Bobby swears to avenge his father’s death and bring Nezhinski in at all costs.

The story is no great shakes. Might have seen the same a zillion times before. Yet, We Own The Night is a compelling watch with some revetting performances especially by Phoenix and Wahlberg.

The movie tends to get sluggish though and could have done with some tighter editing. The chase sequence when Bobby is attacked is uniquely shot.

Nothing new. But a good dvd watch this one if you have the time.

The Academy Award-winning No Country For Old Men is written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen starring Josh Brolin, Tommy Lee Jones and Javier Bardem. Adapted from the Cormac McCarthy novel of the same name, No Country for Old Men tells the story of a drug deal gone wrong, and the ensuing cat-and-mouse drama, as three men crisscross each other’s paths in the desert landscape of 1980 West Texas.

It is June 1980 in desolate Texas country and local sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) believes that times are changing with violence on the rise.
Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem), is arrested and taken into custody by a sheriff’s deputy. The deputy scarcely has time to describe Chigurh’s unique weapon, a captive bolt pistol, to authorities before Chigurh wraps his handcuffs around the deputy’s neck, strangles him to death and escapes.

Miles away, Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) hunts pronghorn antelope near the Rio Grande when he stumbles upon a group of corpses and a lone dying thristy man: the aftermath of a drug deal gone awry.
And a truck bed of heroin.
And two million dollars in a satchel.
Which Moss decides to hang on to Smile

Later that night in bed with his wife Carla Jean (Kelly Macdonald), Moss is troubled by the dying man’s request for water and return to the scene only to run into the Mexican gangsters to whom the money belongs to.
He barely escapes and sends his wife away and narrowly misses Chigurh, now hired to retrieve the stolen money, which he tracks through the small transponder hidden inside the satchel.

A meticulous, brooding psychopath, Chigurh does not hesitate to kill anyone impeding his mission, his victims ranging from gangsters and law enforcement officials to civilians he encounters by chance. Moss, unaware of the transponder darts from motel to motel in an attempt to elude his pursuers. Meanwhile, Bell focuses on locating and protecting Moss, following the trail of corpses left by Chigurh as he searches for the money.

Quirky, gory, fast and compelling No Country For Old Men is a must watch flick of 2007. Advance book your tickets, grab a dvd or whatever but don’t miss this one Smile

Based on Ian McEvan’s critically acclaimed novel of the same name, Atonement starring James McAvoy and Keira Knightley is one of the nominations in the best picture category this year at the Oscars. A nomination well deserved indeed.

The year is 1935. 13-year-old fledgling writer Briony Tallis(Saoirse Ronan), the youngest of three, and her family live a life of wealth and privilege. One hot summer day when Briony can’t get any of her visiting cousins to perform in the first play she has ever written she witnesses a scene by the fountain with her elder sister Cecilia(Keira Knightley) and the housekeeper’s educated son, Robbie Turner(James McAvoy), stoking Briony’s vivid imagination.

Robbie carries a torch for the headstrong Cecilia and believes that Cecilia has similar feelings and all it will take is for one spark to get this relationship started. When it does, Briony — who has a crush on Robbie — is compelled to interfere, going so far as accusing Robbie of a crime he did not commit. Cecilia and Robbie declare their love for each other, but he is arrested and with Briony bearing false witness, the course of three lives is changed forever.

Briony continues to seek forgiveness for her childhood misdeed. Through a terrible and courageous act of imagination, she finds the path to her uncertain atonement, and to an understanding of the power of enduring love.

Spanning several decades Atonement touches you immensely. The accusation of a young girl convinced she is right compels two lovers on a journey they never wished to embark on.

Kiera Knightley as the headstrong Cecilia who stands by Robbie through the worst is compelling.
James McAvoy brings to life the anguished Robbie shamed for life for a crime he did not commit.
Saoirse Ronan, Romola Garai and Vanessa Redgrave playing Briony at different ages are marvelous as they make the journey of Briony’s shock, betrayal, regret and atonement.

Director Joe Wright tells a gripping tale with several scenes retold in different view points.

This is a fantastic watch!!!

Jason Bourne is back Very Happy Minus Marie though Sad

This time around Bourne is set out to unravel his murky past and discover who and what made him Jason Bourne and the man he was before that.

Slick, fast and edgy The Bourne Ultimatium is a fitting finish to the Bourne trilogy. The story is gripping(though it has nothing to do with the 3rd book),the action awesome and Matt Damon as Jason Bourne is wonderful.

The Bourne Ultimatium is a compelling watch. This one is a must watch Smile

Ironic though that one of Hollywood’s most good looking men, Matt Damon was called on to play the man with the forgettable face…Jason Bourne Wink

Based on the Transformers franchise the film of the same name is directed by Michael Bay and executive produced by Steven Spielberg.
The film begins with Optimus Prime, the leader of the heroic Autobots explaining Cybertron’s destruction at the hands of Megatron, the evil Deceptiocons leader, and his quest to obtain the Allspark(which can grant independent life).
Megatron discovers the Allspark on Earth, but crash-lands in the Arctic Circle, and freezes in the ice. Captain Archibald Witwicky and his crew of explorers stumble upon Megatron’s body in 1897. Megatron’s navigational system is unintentionally activated, and Archibald’s eye glasses are imprinted with the Allspark’s coordinates.
Some years later Sector 7, a secret United States government organization, discovers the Allspark and builds the Hoover Dam around it to mask the energy signal. The still-frozen Megatron is moved into this facility, and is reverse engineered to further advance human technology.

Back in the present day, the rest of the Decepticons—Blackout, Frenzy, Barricade, Starscream, Scorponok, Bonecrusher and Devastator—have landed on Earth and assumed the disguise of Earth vehicles (except Scorponok, who keeps his scorpion-like alien form) and are busy trying to hack into the military database to get the location of the Allspark and Megatron.

Meanwhile Sam Witwicky(Shia LaBeouf ) is trying hard to sell his grandfather’s glasses on e-bay to raise money to buy his first car. He ends up buying Bumblebee an Autobot who helps him woo the sexy Mikaela Banes(Megan Fox). When Sam sees his car transform he does his best to get rid of it but once he is rescued by Bumblebee from the evil Barricade he joins hands with the rest of the Autobots who have landed on earth and aids Optimus Prime in destroying the Allspark.

Though the characterization could have done with some better work Michael Bay does a good job with Transformers. The movie is fast paced and packed with loads of cool gadgety fights and chase sequences.

Technically superb, Transformers is definitely worth a watch :D

It’s early morning in London. Two girls Kelly(Lorraine Stanley) and Joanne(Georgia Groome) burst into a rundown toilet, bleeding and shaken. Soon they are running for their lives to Brighton.

Stuart Allen(Sam Spruell) finds his father’s dead body and he will not rest till he has answers.
Kelly and Joanna are the only ones who know.

Derek(Johnny Harris), Kelly’s pimp is the only one who can find them and he has 24 hours to do so before Stuart kills him.

Fast paced, slick and gripping, Paul Andrew Williams’ London to Brighton is a winner. Though the story is nothing new and you are pretty sure of how the ending will turn out you can’t stop watching :)

Grim is the best way to describe this one. Not for anyone looking for fun and frolic
