There are two types of people in the world – those who like to sleep and those who don’t. The former category largely consists of those who love to sleep but are not allowed to, thus, seemingly persecuted for their beliefs. I should know. After all, I am a life-member of this noble community.

We are a group of people brought together by a common passion and facing common obstacles in our path to the fulfilment of our philosophy. We have members from all walks of life, with a large number of students and young professionals within our ranks.  We understand the importance of sleep and acknowledge its great power to heal the mind, body and soul. Our dream is simple and that is we want a chance to dream. Our goal is to sleep until it is essential that we be awake.

We do not impose our sleep habits on each other. We do not believe in the ancient saying that early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise, nor do we care enough to contradict it. Our members can turn in and get up at whatever time they please; they can greet the morning sun and then sleep for all we care. We come in when they feel that the aforementioned matter is no longer their call. Disruptions of beauty sleep or otherwise, of a kindred spirit are painful for the entire community.

And we endure constant pain. Our situation is nothing short of disgraceful. Ask any member; he will give you gut-wrenching stories. All we ask for are a few hours of Undisturbed Sleep, which we are cruelly denied.

Is it too much to expect some well-deserved sleep time after a hard day’s work or before the start of a long arduous day? Well apparently a lot of the dogs of many-a-neighbourhood think so. We love dogs. Man’s best friend, protector of the innocent, making the area safe for the rest of us et al. But do they really have to bark at every milkman, paperboy, early-morning-jogger, cyclist, car, cat, lizard and cockroach around?

It is obvious that this is nothing short of a heinous conspiracy hatched by them to ungraciously shock us out of our deepest slumber, for their own sadistic pleasure. A sudden loud burst of barking invading a sweet-dream may not actually put you in the hospital with myocardial infarction (though you may feel inclined to think otherwise), but no doubt will leave you with a throbbing head for the rest of the time when you are on your feet.

Let us not even think about the terrible mood it will put you in. Your day is effectively ruined. And who is the only being immune to any mood-swings on your part? The one who stands by you through the toughest tests of life, the only one who seems to understand you, the one who has you in their furry clutches, your ‘best’ friend—the dog. So everything works out fine for them. Their intent is made clear when they curl up in YOUR beds as soon as you drag yourself out as if to say ‘Gotcha sucker!’.

Our condition is more pitiful when along with the four-legged creatures; the two-legged ones get into the act. No, the honey-laced voice of the lark outside the window does not bother us (we are made of sterner stuff), but humans do. A wise man, as all wise men do, wisely said that man is man’s own enemy.

We’ll second that. It is only natural I suppose, for envy to rear its ugly head when one awake-human sees another who is blissfully not so. But when jealousy takes over, the former species does everything to ensure that there is not just one awake-human, but two awake-humans as soon as possible. The direct approach is popular and generally effective: a poke in the ribs, a rough shake, a sharp tug of the blankets, often accompanied with a “Get up you dolt!” But subtler methods are not lost on us either. Loud out-of-tune singing, a door in the vicinity purposefully slammed shut, unnecessary clattering of vessels, incessant barging in and out of rooms, a television or radio turned up a little more than normal, would assuredly wake us up in a wink. “Are you sleeping?” I would be if you let me!.Very often, however, the reveille cannot be traced to any particular person or cause, but to a situation itself. We would like to sleep, but we have to work; we would like to sleep but we have to study. It is at such times that we have to steel our resolves and strengthen out hearts and minds, and drag ourselves out of warm beds reassuring ourselves that a few winks lost now are forty winks gained another time.

In many of the situations mentioned above, the emotions aroused in us may vary between those of anger, resentment, anguish, despair, hurt and resignation. But the one singular thing that brings all of these along with absolute undiluted irritation as it wakes us up, is the telephone. Ruining the deepest of sleep and the sweetest of dreams with its harsh tone, it is like a spoiled child demanding immediate attention. Rubbing salt to sore wounds would be when we answer it, albeit groggily, only to discover, to emotions indescribable, that the curse-to-mankind at the other end of the line dialled the wrong number.

Yes, the battle before us is a long and taxing one. But our strength lies in numbers. As long as there is day and there is night, there are people who want to sleep. We also have another important factor that the enemy lacks – the urge to dream. And nobody can take that away from us.
