I still remember those days just as if it was yesterday..Getting up from sleep every morning and seeing my father getting ready to go to work was something which was an everyday scenario in my household.
“Why do you go to work daddy?â€, one day I asked him while my curious eyes searched his puzzled face as he was desperately searching for the perfect tie to match up his attire. “If I don’t go to work who will buy you the Barbie dolls and chocolates?†he answered with satisfied look on his face as he held the blue silk tie firmly in his hand.
His car honking in front of the house at night was an indication that he was back home. During weekends, I have seen him work till the wee hours of morning, his face clearly reflecting that the work had taken toll on him but still he never gave up…
In this hectic life everyone seems to be married to their work! As the day passes more and more people seem to be becoming part of this “workaholic†bandwagon. Like my dad, everyone seems to be having this myth that in order to succeed one has to be loyal to his or her work and in their priority list this has undeniably taken the first place.
If you tell an individual that he or she is a workaholic, they will surely try to dodge the question and will refuse to accept that they’re a one of them.
How do you decide if you are a Workaholic ?
If you are caught in the dilemma of categorizing workaholics from others then try asking yourself questions like “Am I missing out on my personal life because of professional commitments?†or do you find yourself getting bored when you are not working? If answers to these questions get a positive nod from your end then you are surely turning into a workaholic!
Yes You are a Workaholic if …
At times you find yourself as if you are an unknown face among your family members or sometimes, you might be caught off guard by your friends at social events as you might be busy thinking about your work! If you have given positive nods to the above stated questions or seemed to have fitted with a perfect ease in the mentioned scenarios then you are getting close to fit the profile of a workaholic.
Damn !! You are a Workaholic !! Next what ? How Do you get rid of it ??
Before the work takes a toll on you and you end up losing your dear ones because of your professional life then this is an issue which needs to be taken into consideration seriously.
While you are at work are you slogging endlessly or is there a fun element associated with the work as well? If you have a myth that when you’re at work you need to maintain the serious composure then you’re mistaken! Who says one can’t have fun while working?
If the work pressure is high try to catch up with your colleagues or go out for a stroll in the nearby park this will surely help you to unwind yourself. Another suggestion form my end would be to take up yoga classes or do some meditation as it will help you to rejuvenate your mind and you will feel more relaxed. It’s necessary to calm your mind before you divert your mind to do other things and if you are losing out on your family life then it’s high time to take control over things.
Before you are left to live alone in this world its better you start living from today!
